“In creating a narrative, there are four essential elements to consider: message, conflict, character, and plot. We must first understand the message we want to convey, and the development should include conflict as a contrasting element that draws interest to our work. This enables each character to play a distinct role, with all elements intertwined in a captivating storyline that makes it easier for the audience to engage with and enjoy our art,” as expressed by Prof. Andrew Kulman, Professor of Arts and Design at Birmingham City University’s School of Visual Communication.
Beyond academia, Prof. Andrew is also an illustrator for children’s literature and an expert in new techniques in printmaking, graphic art, narrative storytelling, and sequential art. With his depth of experience, he highlights the crucial role of narrative in various art forms—illustrations, paintings, photography, and film—to convey stories to viewers and readers alike effectively.

Patricia, one of our animation students, asked, “With so many types of artworks that seem similar, how do we make our work different?”
Embracing the question, Prof. Andrew emphasized that “An artist’s unique narrative and personal touch bring a special quality into their work and give it a unique character that stands out.”
What makes our artwork unique is its message, which isn’t limited to written words—it can also be expressed through images, colors, fonts, or other forms that resonate with the audience.

Lastly, the discussion around narrative and artistic techniques also captured our students’ attention. Their enthusiasm to gain insights from Prof. Andrew has broadened their international experience and deepened their understanding of art’s narrative. This international seminar is a steppingstone towards enhancing the relationship between BINUS University and Birmingham City University, particularly in fostering growth in the creative industries.
