The Approach Behind BINUS University’s Return to the Top 5 in the AppliedEdu Private University Ranking ASEAN 2027

Jakarta, 21 October 2026 – Strong performance across the six criteria assessed in the AppliedEdu Private University Ranking ASEAN 2027 has brought BINUS University back into the Top 5 in the region. The university also maintained its position as Indonesia’s leading private university and ranked 37th in Asia. Its overall score increased significantly to 63.37 from 50.58 last year.
AppliedEdu assesses universities based on six criteria: teaching and learning (40%), employability (20%), community engagement (10%), research (10%), institutional reputation (10%), and internationalization (10%).
One of the ways BINUS strengthens teaching and learning and graduate employability is through its mandatory 3+1 Enrichment Program. The program combines three years of academic study with one year of enrichment. Students may pursue their enrichment through one or two of the seven available tracks: internships, study abroad, entrepreneurship, research, community development, specific independent study, and further study.
“We have worked closely with our partners to share responsibility for designing authentic learning experiences for our students. A university can realistically institutionalize systematic practitioner co-teaching into existing core modules, especially through the mandatory 3+1 Enrichment Program. While we provide pedagogical rigor, ethical foundations, and academic frameworks, our industry partners bring real-world complexity, rapid technological change, and performance benchmarks,” stated Vice-Rector Rini Setiowati during an AppliedEdu panel discussion on Beyond Academic Knowledge.
This approach gives students the opportunity to complement their academic learning with hands-on experience. By engaging directly with industry or communities, they gain practical exposure that helps prepare them for their future careers.
A strong university is built not only by its students, but also by the lecturers and staff behind them as well as integrated learning ecosystem with technology.
For lecturers, working with industry partners and policymakers also provides opportunities to bring current professional practices and emerging challenges into their teaching and research. Meanwhile, through research and community development activities, faculty, staff, and students frequently work together on projects that address real needs in society.
Hence to support everyday teaching and learning, we use BINUSMAYA, the university’s digital learning management platform. It makes students and educators to easily access learning resources from anywhere and stay connected. Students can also access the Global Learning System (GLS) through BINUSMAYA, where they can connect and interact with guest lecturer from over 200 industry and global partners.
By combining the 3+1 Enrichment Program with integrated digital learning, we create more opportunities for engagement with industry, policymakers, and wider communities, which aligned with the university commitment to Co-Create the Intelligent Society. Over time, these efforts have strengthened our academic ecosystem, enhanced academic quality, and supported the growing international recognition of BINUS University, as reflected in our recent achievements in the AppliedHE rankings.
