Tangerang, 9 October 2026 – The retail industry offers diverse career opportunities that extend beyond customer service and store operations, encompassing areas such as merchandising, business analytics, technology, and digital commerce. Understanding this evolving landscape and the skills required to succeed in the industry was the focus of a seminar titled “Exploring Career Options and Industry Landscape,” organized by BINUS University through its Internationalization Unit at BINUS @Kemanggisan, Anggrek Campus.

The seminar featured Anisa Sulistyorini Pratiwi, Head of MAP Retail Academy at MAP Group Asia, who shared insights into the evolving retail employment landscape and the competencies needed to build a career in the industry. The session encouraged students from diverse academic backgrounds to explore career possibilities in retail and understand how their skills can contribute to the sector.

Retail today encompasses more than the products displayed in stores. Store ambience, business performance, customer experience, people management, technology, and digital commerce all contribute to the industry’s operations. As global brands continue to adapt to changing consumer expectations, an omnichannel mindset and a strong focus on people have become increasingly important in delivering seamless customer experiences.

Beyond its dynamic environment, the retail industry also offers opportunities for continuous growth, skill development, and innovation. The sector challenges individuals to adapt to changing business needs, develop new competencies, and explore different professional pathways.

During the session, Anisa introduced the ten qualities of MAP People: achievement orientation, initiative, effective communication, integrity, service from the heart, agility, quality excellence, creativity and innovation, teamwork and collaboration, and continuous learning. These qualities reflect the importance of combining professional competencies with a strong service mindset, adaptability, and the ability to work effectively with others.

Students were also encouraged to start developing these qualities during their university years by participating in student organizations, completing project and research-based assignments, joining competitions, and pursuing internship opportunities. These experiences provide opportunities to apply knowledge, strengthen practical abilities, and develop the professional attitudes needed to navigate the workplace.

“To thrive in the retail industry, students need to develop both soft and hard skills. Getting involved in organizations, projects, competitions, and internships can help build these competencies, while continuous learning and adaptability are essential in keeping up with the industry’s evolving demands,” was a key takeaway from the discussion.

The session further highlighted that soft skills alone are not enough to succeed in today’s retail industry. As the job market evolves alongside business demands and digital transformation, technical capabilities are becoming increasingly important. Students need to strengthen their hard skills in areas such as data analytics, business acumen, and business communication to better understand business operations and respond to industry needs.

Anisa also explained that professional competency consists of three interconnected elements: knowledge, which represents what individuals know; skills, which reflect what they can do; and attitude, which shapes how they behave. Developing all three elements is essential for individuals to contribute effectively, collaborate with others, and grow in their chosen careers.

To provide a clearer picture of career possibilities, the seminar introduced several career areas at MAP, including merchandising and merchandise planning, operations, and e-commerce and wholesale. These roles demonstrate the breadth of opportunities available in retail and the different specializations that contribute to business performance and customer experience.

The seminar concluded with an interactive Kahoot quiz that allowed participants to revisit key insights from the discussion. Three winners were recognized, bringing an engaging close to the session and reinforcing the importance of understanding industry trends and preparing for future career opportunities.

Through this initiative, BINUS University’s Internationalization Unit continues to connect students with industry perspectives and practical career insights. By encouraging students to develop relevant knowledge, skills, and attitudes, the seminar supported their preparation for an evolving professional landscape and broadened their understanding of career opportunities in the retail industry.
