These collaborated programs are designed to provide interdisciplinary learning experiences that equip undergraduate students with relevant knowledge and skills needed in the fishery and maritime sectors with digital technology. Indonesia’s extensive maritime zone, which covers more than 5.8 million km², is rich in biodiversity and natural marine resources, providing various economic opportunities for the fishery and marine sectors that play a crucial role in supporting the national economy and ensuring food security.

As per the Ministry of Marine Affairs and Fisheries’ 2023 data, fishery production increased by 13%, totaling 24.7 million tons, and contributed around IDR 555 trillion to the national gross domestic product (GDP), but the contribution remains below 5%, indicating further potential for development.

“The fisheries and maritime industries require professionals with a deep understanding of both the Blue Economy and the integration of digital technologies, which are essential for sustainable growth. Higher education institutions play a vital role in producing such talent, therefore, we need to develop highly skilled human resources to fully harness these potentials of marine-based economic resources,” added Dr. Nelly, S.Kom., M.M., CSCA., BINUS University’s Rector.

With BINUS University’s expertise in technology and digital innovation, combined with UNPAD’s strength in Blue Economy studies, we have designed these dual degree programs in digital technology in fisheries and maritime sciences to integrate the principles of the Blue Economy with advanced digital technology, equipping the next generation to drive transformation in both sectors.

Prof. Rina Indiastuti, SE., MSIE., Rector of Padjadjaran University, emphasized, “To advance practices in the Blue Economy, we can’t solely rely on traditional business methods. We need to enhance these methods with research, innovation, and integrating digital technologies to drive sustainable progress.”

This groundbreaking effort plays a vital role in fostering sustainable future for Indonesia by aligning our educational efforts with national priorities and empowering society through knowledge and innovation in these sectors.

The collaboration between our universities is not limited to bachelor’s degrees; we have also expanded our offerings to include master’s programs in Digital Economy, Digital Business Fisheries, and Digital Technology, introduced in July 2023. By providing pathways at both undergraduate and graduate levels, we strive to equip students with the necessary skills and knowledge to excel in their careers and contribute to the fishery and maritime sectors.
