Cross-Disciplinary Collaboration Boosts BINUS UNIVERSITY to the 251–300 Position in THE Interdisciplinary Science Rankings 2026
Jakarta, 20 November — The Times Higher Education (THE) Interdisciplinary Science Rankings (ISR) 2026 ranked us on 251–300 – major leap from 501-600 band as the top-ranked private university in Indonesia and affirms our growing strength in interdisciplinary research.
This advancement marks a significant acceleration in both the quality and quantity of our cross-disciplinary research that strengthen our ongoing commitment in fostering interdisciplinary collaboration, not only within the university, but together with industry partners, communities, and think tank.
“This achievement is driven by the interdisciplinary collaboration of Binusians to address global challenges. Our world needs integrated solutions, and BINUS University is committed to driving research that not only meets global quality standards but also delivers impact on society and national advancement,” said Dr. Nelly, Rector of BINUS University.
The ISR 2026 ranking, officially published by THE, is the world’s first global ranking designed to measure universities’ contributions to interdisciplinary research. It evaluates how institutions advance knowledge through cross-scientific collaboration or by integrating Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics (STEM) with non-STEM disciplines such as social sciences, economics, psychology, law, education, and health.
THE assesses universities across three main pillars are Input, Process, and Output. The input pillar focuses on research investment and funding support, the process pillar assesses institutional mechanisms that facilitate collaboration across fields, and the output pillar captures the reach and impact of cross-disciplinary publications. Together, these pillars provide a comprehensive picture of how well universities nurture and sustain interdisciplinary scholarships.
In this 2026 edition, they analyzed more than 18 million publications and 174 million citations, making it one of the most comprehensive assessments of interdisciplinary research worldwide. Its methodology combines extensive bibliometric analysis with global surveys of active researchers to capture universities’ reputations in supporting interdisciplinary teams.
For BINUS, the most remarkable improvements appeared in the Process and Output indicators. Process surged from 33.3 to 66.7, while Output increased from 16.8 to 36.1. These results demonstrate the effectiveness of ongoing institutional efforts, ranging from improved data readiness and systematic faculty briefings to broader partner engagement and stronger research impact, as reflected in bibliometric performance.
Moreover, recent interdisciplinary publications have not only grown in volume but have also shown stronger academic impact, reflected in higher cross-disciplinary citations in global databases. International recognition of BINUS’s support for collaborative research further contributed to this ranking advancement. Overall, our score experienced a remarkable jump within just one year from 25.4–29.9 to 45.3–47.5, which demonstrated the rapid momentum and expanding influence of our interdisciplinary research ecosystem.
In addition to increased output, our interdisciplinary publications are gaining greater academic traction, seen in the rise of cross-disciplinary citations in global databases. Coupled with international recognition of our collaborative research culture, these developments played a major role in elevating our ranking. Our overall score rose dramatically within one year, from 25.4–29.9 to 45.3–47.5, underscoring the growing strength of our interdisciplinary research ecosystem.
This achievement reflects our long-term research strategy that prioritizes knowledge integration. We continue to build a dynamic interdisciplinary ecosystem supported by thematic research centers, multidisciplinary laboratories, upgraded research facilities, and institutional policies that encourage collaboration across fields.
We can conclude that these efforts equip our researchers to tackle global challenges from digital transformation and health technology to sustainability, the creative economy, and social development. With this accomplishment, we reaffirm our commitment to empowering society and contributing to national progress through world-class education and research.
