Macau, 21 April — Asia has emerged as a dynamic global hub for research, development, and innovation over the past decade. The region’s rapid progress in science and technology has been supported significantly by higher education institutions, which are vital in advancing digital transformation.

In 2025, this momentum is reflected in the Times Higher Education (THE) Asia Universities Summit, held 22-24 April in Macau. This year’s summit highlights the transformative journey of Asia in science, technology, and innovation, bringing together more than 80 global university leaders, policymakers, and academics. As a key forum for fostering collaboration and global partnerships, the summit explores how Asian universities are shaping the future of innovation while reinforcing their role in sustainable and inclusive development.

Through research initiatives, knowledge-sharing platforms, and cultivating a highly skilled workforce, universities across Asia continue to contribute to the region’s growing prominence in the global innovation landscape.

BINUS University is proud to represent Indonesia at the summit. Our delegation is led by Dr. Rini Setiowati, S.E., M.M., our Vice Rector of Collaboration and Global Engagement, in showcasing our continued commitment to advancing academic quality and fostering community empowerment through sustainable innovation, which aligns with the university’s vision to be a world-class institution.

During the summit, Prof. Derwin Suhartono, S.Kom., MTI., Dean of the School of Computer Science, will share insights on how universities with strengths in Computer Science and Information Systems, such as BINUS University, can collaborate with small businesses to cultivate a new generation of startup talent. His session emphasizes how enterprising education and research excellence can contribute to broader economic empowerment.

BINUS University’s active role in nurturing innovation ecosystems reflects a broader regional movement. Across Southeast Asia, universities are working closely with governments and the private sector to integrate technology into business models. This collaborative approach has led to significant achievements, with ASEAN startups generating USD 3.26 billion in revenues in 2024 alone, indicating the powerful role universities play in the digital economy.

Meanwhile, countries such as Japan, China, and South Korea continue to lead globally in innovation, supported by robust university-industry-government partnerships. According to the World Intellectual Property Organization (WIPO), these countries held the top global positions in patent filings for artificial intelligence and communication technologies in 2024.

As Asia continues its evolution into a global center for innovation, BINUS University remains steadfast in its mission to advance research, uplift communities, and promote sustainability. Our participation in global forums like the THE Asia Universities Summit enables us to share knowledge, foster international partnerships, and reinforce our commitment to empowering society through transformative education and innovation.

Stay tuned as we bring more thoughts from Macau!
