Building Capacity in Young Leaders to Drive Sustainable Development
Jakarta, 25 October — For nearly eight decades, the United Nations (UN) has been a foundational pillar of global cooperation, bringing together governments, industries, educational institutions, and non-governmental organizations (NGOs) in the quest for peace, environmental protection, poverty reduction, improved public health, and justice for human rights.

Celebrating UN Day 2024 (24/10), the UN in Indonesia, in collaboration with the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of the Republic of Indonesia and BINUS University, hosted an engagement forum and talk shows that focused on empowering youth such as university students in driving innovation and finding sustainable solutions to global challenges.
In this digital era that continually reshapes how we connect and innovate, universities play a vital role in building the capacity for young people to be future leaders. They provide students with the resources and experiences that equip them to make meaningful, sustainable impacts.

At the event, students were given opportunities to interact with UN leaders, including Ms. Gita Sabharwal, the UN Resident Coordinator in Indonesia, H.E. Mulawarman Tugio, Senior Advisor to the Minister of Foreign Affairs of Indonesia, Ambassadors to Indonesia, and partners from industry and NGOs.
Dr. Nelly, S.Kom., M.M., CSCA, BINUS University’s Rector, shared, “Empowering youth is a key focus of this agenda, as we recognize them as the leaders of tomorrow who capable of driving sustainable change and shaping a more resilient future. This endeavor requires the collective commitment of all stakeholders, ensuring that every voice is heard and valued in this journey.”

BINUS University, as a leading university in digital technology and business in Indonesia, has established a supportive environment that promotes self-discovery and personal growth among our students. We provide enrichment track includes a variety of options such as studying abroad, internships with industry partners, and participating in entrepreneurship programs. These experiences are designed to help them develop essential skills for their future careers, including adaptability, critical thinking, and digital literacy.
“We urge the young generation, including our students, to join forces in addressing global issues and offering innovative solutions in the process,” added Dr. Rini Setiowati, S.E., M.B.A., the Vice-Rector of Collaboration and Global Engagement at BINUS University.

We also support students to engage in community development programs, fostering their awareness of social issues. By working directly on sustainability projects. they learn to develop solutions to address social, economic, and environmental challenges.
The vibrant atmosphere during the UN Day celebration at our Anggrek Campus was highlighted by the active participation of students, faculty members, and staff as they engaged with UN representatives in Indonesia for discussing the implementation of ongoing sustainability programs and sought to connect with the community for impactful change.

As university students actively engage in academic activities, community outreach, and dynamic sustainability events like today’s, they are not only enhancing their professional competencies but also embracing a vibrant sense of social responsibility marked by empathy and inclusivity. This unique combination fuels their passion and equips them to make a lasting, positive impact on our communities and society.
